First impressions can be misleading. But the problem isn’t that we judge a person by their first impression, the problem is that we stick to that judgement; leaving no room for change or improvement.
Society has convinced us that there is a certain way to look and act if you want to be labelled as someone. I’ll never forget the day I went to fetch my race number for an upcoming mountain bike race.
As I stood in line for registration, a promo guy – giving away free sports supplements – asked me if I was also doing the race. After replying yes, he responded with: “Oh, you don’t look like someone who can cycle”. And nothing annoys me more than judging a person’s abilities according to their appearance. Long story short, I was seeing red.
“YOU WILL NEVER INFLUENCE THE WORLD BY BEING JUST LIKE IT”
If I listened to people who told me that I shouldn’t cycle because I don’t look like an athlete, I wouldn’t have stories to share about my achievements. Or if I listened to people who said that I won’t be able to start my own business because I’m too nice, I wouldn’t have been able to live my dream like I do now.
People tend to get so caught up in their own world, they forget that being different isn’t a bad thing. And just because someone doesn’t fit into your cookie-cutter idea of what an athlete or a good mother is, doesn’t mean they’re going to fail at their job.
The fact that you don’t fit into the cookie cutter means that you have something that the others don’t. All you need to do is to make it work to your advantage.
“YOU’RE ONLY ONE DECISION AWAY FROM A TOTALLY DIFFERENT LIFE”
The reality is that the world is filled with small-minded people who will continue to put you in a box. But you have the choice to not listen to them!
If you compare apples to oranges and expect similar results, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. And if you’re one of those suffering from the cookie cutter mentality, don’t be afraid to be open-minded. Your brain isn’t going to fall out.
Every person’s journey is different and that’s okay. And if you have a different picture of what a good mother, singer, or writer is, you’re not wrong because the rest of the world says so. If your road leads you to true happiness, you are on the right track.
“PEOPLE TAKE DIFFERENT ROADS SEEKING FULFILLMENT AND HAPPINESS. JUST BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT ON YOUR ROAD DOESN’T MEAN THEY ARE LOST.”
– Dalai Lama
