Gâteaux on 95

This past year, small businesses never ceased to amaze me with their hard work and talent. Just when I thought I saw – and tasted – what they had to offer, Gâteaux on 95 treated my taste buds with croissant creations and chocolate decadence. But I don’t want to let the pastry out of the bag yet!

 

THE HEART OF GÂTEAUX ON 95

Amoré Crause is the mind and heart of Gâteaux on 95. She has worked at a few top restaurants in the country these past two years. Her resume includes The Pot Luck Club and Chef’s Warehouse at Beau Constantia. Impressive, right?

Her memories of baking with her grandma and mother are what motivates her to work hard. And there is no secret to success beyond motivation and hard work.

CAN YOU SAY CROISSANT?

Gâteaux on 95 focusses on croissant dough, but don’t think you just have croissants to choose from!

 

A lot of creativity is put into the baking to give us an array of croissant creations like cinnamon and pecan nut buns made from croissant dough, red velvet cronuts, and peppermint crisp or custard cronuts.

 

I was lucky enough to taste the custard cronuts, Babka, and triple chocolate chip cookies. In case you don’t know, a cronut is a doughnut made with croissant dough. Who said a doughnut can’t be fancy?

 

Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies

If you have a sweet tooth, listen up. Everyone likes a good cookie, but you will love this one. It had a texture that is slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with big chunks of chocolate.

How does she do it? I can’t explain, but probably because my mouth is watering thinking about it (but of course, it’s her talent and experience).

 

Babka

Babka is a traditional, Eastern European sweet bread and Gâteaux on 95 turned it into a tasteful croissant creation with homemade Nutella. It paired great with my cup of Italian espresso; a delicious afternoon treat.

 

Custard Cronut

My favourite had to be the custard-filled cronuts. The crust was light, flaky, and delicately balanced in terms of sweetness. The custard filling was thick and creamy. So yummy. Oh, and the powdered sugar on top rounded it off perfectly.

I don’t really call anything perfect, but these custard cronuts were! And you don’t have to take my word. Try it. Then, you will understand.
